Taylor Swift dances in a Dior tartan outfit and velvet shorts on the red carpet of the 2024 MTV VMAs and wins an award for “Fortnight”

Taylor Swift brought the plaid, check and tartan trend to the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet. The singer attended the ceremony in Elmont, New York on Wednesday in a printed Christian Dior dress from the label’s Resort 2025 collection.

Swift’s high-low look featured a tartan taffeta corset with a flowing train with a puffed hem. She accessorized with a pair of high-waisted velvet shorts. The “Tortured Poets Department” artist wore fingerless, elbow-length leather gloves and matching over-the-knee boots by Stuart Weitzman and completed her look with 30-carat yellow diamond and black jade earrings by Lorraine Schwartz.

Swift’s longtime stylist Joseph Cassell Falconer dressed her for the occasion. Falconer, who has worked with the singer for over a decade, also put together her wardrobe for the “Eras Tour.”

Swift wore her dark blonde locks in waves with full bangs, while her makeup included smoky eyes and matte terracotta lips.

Swift was able to accept her first award of the evening: she won the Song of Summer for her song “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone.

“There’s a very clear reason why everyone loves working with Post Malone,” Swift said of the singer in her acceptance speech. “It’s because you are so incredibly talented, so versatile… so unfailingly polite. It took him forever to stop calling me ma’am.”

On Tuesday, Swift announced her support for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, describing her as a “quiet, gifted leader” who can lead with “calm, not chaos.”

“I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a champion to represent them… I was so encouraged and impressed by her choice of Vice President Tim Walz, who has been fighting for decades for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s rights to their own bodies.”

Plaids, checks and tartans are trending this fall. WWD’s Alex Badia noted that several well-known labels, including Chloé, Dior and Burberry, have incorporated these traditional prints into their latest collections.

The MTV VMAs honor the best music videos, artists and songs of the year. Megan Thee Stallion will make her hosting debut during the 2024 ceremony, which will take place on September 11 at UBS Stadium in Elmont, New York. Katy Perry will receive the honorary Video Vanguard Award, while artists up for grabs include Shawn Mendes, Lenny Kravitz, Eminem and Karol G.
