Spaniard Jon Rahm wants to play in three European golf tournaments before the end of the year to maintain his Ryder Cup eligibility, but said on Wednesday that he would not pay fines imposed by the DP World Tour for his LIV golf participation.
The two-time major winner, who joined LIV Golf last December, faces a deadline to pay fines imposed by the DP World Tour on golfers who failed to obtain clearances to participate in Saudi-backed league events that clash with tour events.
While preparing for the LIV golf tournament in Chicago this week, Rahm said he hopes to play in two events in his home country – the Spanish Open and the Andalucia Masters – as well as the Dunhill Links Championship.
However, he admitted that he was not sure whether he was allowed to hit the ball.
“We got into it a long time ago,” Rahm said. “Whether they let me play or not is another matter. I’m not a big fan of the fines. I think I’ve been outspoken about it.”
“I have no intention of paying the fines and we continue to try to talk to them about how we can get this done,” he added.
“I’ve said many times that I’m not going to the Spanish Open for the fame or anything else. I think it’s my duty to Spanish golf to be there and I also want to play in Sotogrande.”
There appears to be an opportunity for Rahm to play if he appeals the sanctions. LIV Golf’s Tyrrell Hatton competed in the British Masters after appealing his sanctions. The penalties will be decided at a later date.
One person who is likely to be watching the situation closely is Luke Donald, who will captain the European team at next year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.
Rahm was one of Europe’s stars in their victory over the United States last year in Rome, the latest edition of the biennial match play showdown.
