Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the English Football Association (FA) over alleged comments he made about his teammate Son Heung-min.
In the summer, the Uruguayan international was asked by the presenter of the Canal 10 show about a Spurs player’s shirt, to which he replied: “Sonny’s? It could also be Sonny’s cousin because they all look the same.”
Anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out said it had received a “significant number” of complaints after the incident. Bentancur apologised to the South Korean international and Spurs captain, who said his team-mate had “made a mistake”.
A statement from the FA said: “Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged with misconduct in relation to a media interview for an alleged breach of FA Rule E3.
“It is alleged that the Tottenham midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 by behaving inappropriately and/or using abusive and/or insulting words and/or causing damage to the reputation of the game.
“It is further alleged that this constitutes a ‘serious breach’ as defined in FA Rule E3.2 as it contains an explicit or implicit reference to nationality and/or racial and/or ethnic origin.
“Rodrigo Bentancur has until Thursday, September 19, 2024, to respond to this allegation.”
